It’s been 1 week since I officially started a detailed training regimen. I clocked in at 8 hours and 10 minutes for specific training and managed to sneak in an additional hour of activity at a ZUMBA class with my sister. I was also able to fit in time to take one day off from activity. This past week I hit the pool 3 times, the pavement/treadmill 3 times, and finally got my bike set up on my trainer for 4 bike sessions.
I was very excited to start training and luckily I have yet to feel the lack of motivation that will surely kick in at some point. I very quickly noticed some changes with my body, both expected and unexpected. They are as follows
Expected:
· To say my hunger/food intake skyrocketed would be an understatement. I feel like I’m always hungry and always eating.
Unexpected:
· My posture seemed to instantly improve
· My energy levels are higher
· My sleep schedule is a little out of whack. I’m not falling asleep as easily but I’m waking up earlier and with more energy.
I’m using a 36 week training program which I found at trifuel.com (I skipped the first 2 weeks of “orientation training”).The program basically breaks down every single workout for every single day. I’ve never been on a training plan like this before and it’s nice to have the advice for what I could/should be doing each day. I’m pushing myself a lot harder than I usually would. I also feel like I am getting a lot more out of my workouts, which is probably why I am feeling such sudden changes.
So far the work load has been completely manageable. This is mostly because I have a very flexible job and a great boss (thanks Daddy!). As long as I meet my 40 hours a week I’m able to take time off during the day for an hour or so to squeeze in a workout. It also helps to have a shower at my office. I keep about 5 outfits in a closet at my office which allows me to run to work whenever I want. Most days I’ve already done one workout by the time my workday ends. Workouts like these seem to fit very nicely into my day because they allow me to maintain a good balance between work, training, and everything else.
This year I set my bike trainer up in my boyfriend’s living room and it’s turned out to be a fun way to spend time together. We pick a show and watch it together as I’m pedaling away. He shouts random commands out every few minutes (“pedal faster”, “get down on your aero bars”, “last minute, fourth quarter”). It makes me laugh and usually pushes me harder. My mom did the same thing last year when I had my bike set up in her living room.
All in all training has started off great. It feels great to be back in the pool and back on a bike. I’ve got a great support system of people who have already made this journey much easier and more enjoyable. They want this for me just as bad as I want it. They’re willing to make sacrifices for me and this goal and in the long run I think that will make all the difference
