I'll be using this blog to document my journey to Ironman Wisconsin which will take place 9/11/11. I'll address nutrition, training, and general issues from my perspective as a beginner triathlete. I will also use this site to document the trials and tribulations I will face in these next nine months as I prepare to become an Ironman.

Current Rants and Raves

I’ve had a slightly stressful two weeks (this, perhaps, is an understatement). Between training (right now I'm on day 20 of 21 day period without a recovery day), extra projects at work and beginning the process of building a house it seems like I’ve barely had enough time to breathe. Listed below are things that have kept me happy and sane during this very busy time in my life.

1.)    Lotus Seed Yoga
I believe that yoga is a great tool that all athletes could benefit from. It keeps all areas of your body strong while also maintaining flexibility which will decrease injuries. A new yoga studio, named Lotus Seed Yoga, recently opened in college town. I got a one month trial membership and have been taking full advantage of it. Besides the reasons listed above yoga also gives me the ability to bring awareness and balance back to my mind and body. If you’ve got a good teacher (and that’s the real key here) you’ll leave yoga class feeling like a whole new person.  I’m 100% de-stressed after every class. I’m happy, enlightened, and at peace, which is something that I have really benefited from these past few weeks. If you’re in Ithaca I highly suggest you check out Lotus Seed Yoga with Diane.
2.)    Coconut water
Recommended to me by my yoga teacher, I finally gave coconut water a try a week ago and I’m hooked. Coconut water is an isotonic solution that helps replace fluids as well as minerals that I lose during exercise. It’s been shown to detoxify the body, balance PH, boost metabolism and the immune system, as well as improving circulation, digestive problems, skin problems, and cardiovascular health. Bottom line; it’s delicious and nutritious.
3.)    Manzella wind stopper gloves
I can’t have a good run if I’m uncomfortable. I can't be comfortable if I'm cold. It’s easy to layer up pants and tops but not as easy to do with gloves which is why having a good pair is important. I recently bought a pair of Manzella wind stopper gloves from my local triathlon store, Finger Lakes Running and Triathlon Company. They’re light weight but have enough material to keep the warm air in. Since they're windbreaker material they also do a nice job of keeping cold air out. They keep my fingers toasty warm which leaves me happy and allows me to focus on my run.
4.)    Spin class
Riding on my trainer was fun… for about a week. Now I get bored after about 20 minutes. I tend to feed off other people’s energy; it's a lot easier for me to work hard when I see other people working hard. Similarly, when I’m on my trainer and Greg is lounging next to me watching TV, I tend to get a little antsy and annoyed.  Spin class has been a great way to keep me working hard on days when my energy and motivation are lacking.
